Applications are invited for the Elsa Neumann Scholarship in Germany available for International PhD Students at the Freie Universität Berlin.

The Freie Universität Berlin was established as an excellent, innovative and forward-thinking university in Germany’s internationally successful university system. It has been rated numerous times as one of the foremost institutions of excellence in the nation and is acclaimed for its international perspective, and also for its approach to academic excellence, its interdisciplinary orientation and its engagement in promoting socially responsible behavior.

As its name indicates, the Freie Universität Berlin has made academic freedom one of its fundamental concepts since it was founded in 1948. From an early beginning, the university acquired a uniquely international perspective, making it the first destination of choice for students and graduates from other countries in Germany today.

The Free University was established in West Berlin in 1948 with American backing during the early Cold War period as a de facto western continuation of the Frederick William University, which was located in East Berlin and was faced with strong communist repression; its name points to West Berlin’s status as under the Western Free World, in contrast to the communist-controlled university in East Berlin.

The university provides a full academic and high quality programs. Although it has a strong international standing in humanities and social sciences, the university offers advanced research facilities in natural and earth sciences, computer sciences and mathematics.

The principal university campus takes place in Berlin-Dahlem, a calm and peaceful environment that allows an excellent opportunity to practice both learning and research.
