The University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom provides completely funded PhD Scholarships in the field of Chemical Engineering in the 2021/2022 academic year.

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Chemistry was created in partnership with industry and as a collaboration of a lot of disciplines, comprising chemistry, biosciences, engineering, and business. The centre intends to offer candidates first class research training and also the technical, theoretical and entrepreneurial skills to allow them to become champions in sustainable chemistry. 

The EPSRC and SFI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Chemistry: Atoms-2-Products, PhD scholarships that last for 48 months to engage in one of three Research Thematic fields:

  • Down to Earth: Catalysis making use of Earth Abundant Metal
  • Psus – A Sustainable Phosphorus Future
  • Plastics from Plants Initiative (PPI)

Project details:

Their candidates will undergo a 4-year PhD program, where the first year provides the chance to access a balanced blend of Core and Research Theme training undertakings. The Core training intends to equip candidates with knowledge and tools related to the wider aspects of their research like sustainability, entrepreneurial skills, and responsible research and innovation, and will comprise a broad range of workshops concentrating on professional skills, career development and wellbeing. Research Theme training is dedicated on the topics particular to each of the three Themes. The program is delivered via a blend of lectures, workshops, group undertakings and lab sessions.

Over the last three years, whilst working on their research projects, candidates will continue to get cross-disciplinary training and research, and will be presented with a broad range of extra training opportunities adapted to support them at the various stages of their PhD cycle.

Eligibility for PhD Scholarships at University of Nottingham

Typically, applicants for the PhD Scholarships at University of Nottingham will possess one of the following:

  • At least, an upper second-class honours degree from a 4-year undergraduate program, or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Natural Sciences, Biosciences, Pharmacy or a  closely related field.
  • A 3-year undergraduate program in one of the above fields plus a Master’s degree and/or a minimum of one year’s experience in the industry.
  • The Centre would especially welcome enthusiastic and highly inspired candidates with a strong academic curiosity and strong talent for research.
  • Candidates must be devoted to working in inter-disciplinary teams and be fervent about working towards a more viable future.
  • Scholarship awards for UK residents provide UK tuition fees and offer a stipend at the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) rate. Foreign candidates may also apply to this Centre, EU candidates are now classified as foreign students.
