Research Fellowships at Royal Academy of Engineering in UK 2022

The Royal Academy of Engineering offers Research Fellowships every year to exceptional early-career researchers to assist them in becoming future research leaders in engineering.

The scheme’s objectives are to:

  • Assist the best early-career researchers in creating their independence and global reputation
  • Offer long-term support allowing the pursuit of an elaborate program of engineering research and influence
  • Develop ambassadors for the Academy and advocates for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines

The Academy is taking applications from early-career researchers globally who have been granted their PhD in the past four years. Furthermore, Research Fellowships has to be held at a UK higher academic institution/university.

The 2022/23 round is taking applications for any one of the following research fellowship schemes:

  • RAEng Research Fellowship
  • RAEng Engineering for Development Research Fellowship
  • RAEng/Orthopaedic Research UK Research Fellowship

Worth of Research Fellowships at Royal Academy of Engineering

The scheme provides funding for five years. Each application is pegged at a maximum grant from the Academy of £500,000 across the five-year period, at 80% of full economic expenses.

Furthermore to the direct financial assistance, the scheme benefits comprise:

  • Mentoring opportunity from an Academy Fellow to provide advice on research and career development
  • Lessening of teaching and administrative responsibilities to devote time to research

  • Networking with other Research Fellows and Academy Fellows

Eligibility for Research Fellowships at Royal Academy of Engineering

  • Research Fellowships have to be held at a UK higher academic institution/university in a department that can demonstrate that it is capable of fully supporting an engineering-based research project and researcher. Furthermore, the host institution has to agree to provide the Research Fellow all the support required for a permanent employee.
  • It is the responsibility of the candidate to get in touch with the host institution and obtain the formal approval from the relevant head of department or school prior to submitting an application.
  • The proposed research project has to be in an engineering subject field. Engineering is defined in its broadest sense, covering a broad range of diverse fields.
  • The candidate should not hold a permanent academic role before the commencement of Research Fellowship.
  • Research Fellows will be hired by the host institution and are expected to devote all their working time to the Research Fellowship program of work. The Research Fellowship should be the Research Fellows’ only source of employment.
  • There are no nationality and age limits for candidates. The host institution is accountable for securing all required work permits and related expenses for the Research Fellows.
  • Candidates who have applied to this scheme in the past and were unsuccessful are qualified to reapply.
  • Research Fellowships have to commence between 1 August 2022 and 31 October 2022. The Academy may extend this period dependent on funding chances. The duration of a Research Fellowship program is five years full-time, computed on a pro-rata basis for part-time awards. Requests for a lesser Research Fellowship period are not accepted.
  • Applications for EDRFs have to satisfy the ODA guidelines. The nation/nations that will directly gain from the proposed research have to be on the DAC list.
  • Applications for RAEng/Orthopaedic Research UK Research Fellowship program have to be in one of the four research areas as specified in the candidate guidance notes page 4.
  • Any applications that are not complete or do not abide by the guidance will be rejected.
